What’s Holding You Back From Overcoming Your Divorce

Divorce is a difficult experience to go through, and it can often leave us feeling lost, anxious, and overwhelmed. 

But while going through such a major life change may be daunting, there are many steps we can take to help us move forward. By understanding the issues that may be holding you back from overcoming your divorce, you can start to make progress towards healing and moving forward in your life.

 

The most common issue that people face when it comes to overcoming their divorce is letting go of the past. 

Letting go of the emotional baggage associated with the divorce is an important part of moving on. Many individuals will cling to memories from the marriage or try to hold onto some sort of control by insisting on staying friends with their ex-spouse. However, this behavior only serves as a blockage in our process of healing and moving on. We need to learn to accept that things have changed between us and our former spouse and acknowledge that we cannot control how they feel or think about us any longer.

 

Another obstacle that prevents people from overcoming their divorce is fear of being alone or losing a sense of security. After all, marriage provided both companionship and financial support for many years so it can be frightening to suddenly have those aspects taken away. Learning how to provide for ourselves financially and emotionally can be empowering but also intimidating; some people find themselves clinging even harder onto memories of their former marriage out of fear of not being able to handle these changes alone.

 

Excessive self-criticism is another issue that people often struggle with during the process of divorcing and overcoming their divorce. Always deal with manipulative partner as pivot teaches. It’s normal to feel guilt, shame, or blame after a divorce; however, too much self-blame can prevent us from seeing ourselves as capable individuals who are capable of recovering from such a painful experience. Finally, allowing others (particularly family members) into our lives during this difficult time is essential if we want to overcome our divorce successfully. 

Sometimes it’s hard for us to open up about what we’re going through when it comes to a subject like divorce, but having loved ones who are willing and able to listen without judgment can be incredibly helpful in dealing with the emotions associated with this experience. Allow yourself time with friends and family who support you emotionally — even if all you do is spend time together in silence — as this will not only help reduce feelings of loneliness but also provide healthy coping mechanisms which will help you heal in time.

 

Divorce is never easy but there are ways we can overcome it so that we don’t allow it to define our future wellbeing or happiness levels forevermore. By recognizing the issues that may be preventing us from moving on such as letting go of past hurtful memories or emotions, reducing excessive self-criticism, providing financially/emotionally for oneself without fear (or guilt), and allowing ourselves time with supportive people who won’t judge us for what we’re going through –– we can start taking steps towards recovering mentally from our divorce experience(s). The most important part is having patience with ourselves: remember it takes time to heal completely yet eventually things do get better!
